ETFGI reports big increase in institutional use of ETF/ETP in latest report
ETFGI, the London based ETF and ETP research and consulting firm, has reported an estimate of 3,367 institutional investors in 50 countries with exposure to this type of investment.
The figures are based on analysis of shareholdings by institutional investors in all ETFs and ETPs listed globally in each quarter from 2005 through 2012. The analysis used Thomson Reuters’ Ownership database, which covers overall shareholdings in various types of securities from 74,000 institutions.
Over the period there was a near doubling in the use of ETFs/ETPs by institutions covered by the data.
Deborah Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI (pictured), said: “We have seen a significant increase in the use of ETFs/ETPs by institutional investors. From 2005 to 2012 there was a 92% increase in the number of institutions that reported using ETFs/ETPs, going from 1,752 institutions globally in 2005 to 3,367 in 2012.”
ETFGI reported that North America accounted for 69.9% of use of these types of investments. Europe accounted for 22%, Asia Pacific 5.3%, Latin America 2.3%, Africa 0.5% and Middle East 0.1%.
