Eurosif study shows continued growth in SRI

The 5th Eurosif Sustainable and Responsible Investment Study suggests that the strength of growth in the SRI market is underpinned by increasing sophistication in the market.

Investors across Europe are relying on a broader set of strategies, and are more likely to combine them, including sustainability-themed, best-in-class, norms-based screening, exclusions, ESG integration, engagement/voting and Impact investments.

Four of these strategies have grown by more than 90% between 2009-11, the Study said. Norms-based screening is the fastest growing strategy with some €2.3trn under management, up 137% since 2009.

The key driver of the market remains institutional investor demand, with legislation considered the second most important market driver. Institutional assets represent 94% of the market.

The growth of SRI now means that close to 50% of Europe’s total assets under management now have policies in place which specifically exclude companies manufacturing certain types of weapons, especially those manufacturing cluster munitions and anti-personnel mines.
