San Diego’s Brandes Investment Partners launches EM equity fund
Brandes Investment Partners, a global investment advisory firm based in San Diego, US, has launched an actively managed emerging market equity fund to tap global growth markets.
The Brandes Emerging Market Equity Fund, a sub-fund of Brandes Investment Funds, applies “a consistent, active, value-based process, with the flexibility to pursue opportunities in emerging markets regardless of region, sector or market capitalization”. The Fund is registered for sale in Switzerland, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Spain.
The fund manager uses a flexible “invest anywhere” approach to seek out investment opportunities, from mid- and small- cap names, through to holdings in frontier markets. Brandes says the fund may invest in companies in developed markets if those companies have significant exposure to emerging economies. Brandes has been investing in emerging market companies for over 30 years.
Charles Brandes, founder of Brandes Investment Partners, said: “Over the past decade, emerging-market strategies have attracted significant inflows from investors hoping to capitalise on the rapid growth of emerging-market economies.”
“However, many have chosen to invest passively and, as a result, have missed out on the more expansive return opportunities from regions, sectors and companies outside of the benchmark. As a firm that has actively managed a dedicated emerging-market mandate for more than 17 years, we are excited to bring this expertise to a larger group of investors through the Fund,” Brandes said.
Christopher Garrett, institutional portfolio manager, said the fund was launched in response to client demand for exposure to key growth markets. “For those with passive or large-cap allocations to these markets, this Fund could provide access to opportunities outside of the main index constituents, which may create the potential for alpha generation.”
Brandes Investment Partners, with its affiliates, manages about $30bn of assets, for institutional and private clients worldwide. Since its inception in 1974, Brandes has applied the value-investing approach to security selection pioneered by Benjamin Graham.
