Robin Johnson of Morningstar to discuss research findings at Amsterdam Forum

Robin Johnson, senior investment consultant at Morningstar, will present findings of research into the concept of efficient income and what this suggests about constructing income efficient portfolios, when he attends the InvestmentEurope Professional Investor Forum in Amsterdam on 8 October.

Johnson (pictured) notes that partly there is relatively little guidance on how to build an efficient income portfolio, and that where there is research it has typically focused on total return strategies combining price return and income return. But total return arguably does not provide a full perspective for somebody who is already retired and looking to generate income rather than use up their capital.

Morningstar has researched the concept of efficient income, subsequently published, which has looked at the challenges that the post-retirement community experiences in a number of markets worldwide. The research suggests that investors with an income focus are likely better served using portfolios specifically constructed for this purpose, since income efficient portfolios can be very different from total return efficient portfolios that happen to generate income. Robin Johnson will discuss the research, its findings, and the subsequent development of a utility used to determine optimal income return portfolio allocation.

Johnson is head of Morningstar’s European consulting team delivering investment solutions to a diverse institutional client base across EMEA. The team is responsible for the management of guided fund lists, asset allocation, model portfolios and fund of funds that Morningstar has been providing in Europe since 2006. He is also a member of Morningstar’s Portfolio Review Committee.

Johnson has been working in the investment industry since 1997 and has more than 14 years’ experience analysing investment managers across all asset classes, previously heading a team of analysts within the research department at independent UK Financial Adviser, Bestinvest. He joined Morningstar Investment Management in January 2007 from Mellon Global Investors, where he was supporting the institutional business development of the multi-boutique asset management group.
