Sarona Asset Management eyes European private equity
Canada-based fund of private equity funds Sarona Asset Management has set up a new office in Amsterdam and recruited Vivina Berla (pictured) from IMC Asset Management, also headquartered in Amsterdam.
Berla has been appointed senior partner and European managing director at Sarona Asset Management.
Before joining IMC Asset Management as managing director in 2009, she worked at Merrill Lynch and Gartmore Investment Management in London.
Her role at Sarona will be particularly focused on Europe, the Middle East and Africa and she will also be a member of its investment committee.
Gerhard Pries, managing partner of Sarona, explained that Berla’s appointment would enable Sarona to deploy greater amounts of capital into small and mid-market companies within frontier markets.
Sarona’s most recently launched fund, the Sarona Frontier Markets Fund, is a private equity fund of funds set up in 2010 that invests in small to mid-market companies with strong growth potential. Underlying funds are based across a range of frontier markets including Turkey, Mexico and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Sarona Asset Management, based in Waterloo-ON, Canada, establishes and manages a number of private equity impact investing funds including the Sarona and MicroVest groups of funds. It has over $180m in assets under management in emerging and developing country markets around the world.
