Ex-economy minister to run for French presidency

The former French minister of Economy and former investment banker Emmanuel Macron (pictured) has announced he will running for the French presidency at the presidential election set in April and May 2017.

Macron, 38, has resigned from the French government on 30 August 2016 after he joined the socialist government of Francois Hollande in 2014.

During his tenure as minister of Economy, he attacked a number of frameworks and laws that were implemented under a French socialist government as the wealth tax and the 35-hour working week.

An achievement during his time at Bercy (French Economy minstry’s location) has been the ‘Loi Macron’ aiming to stimulate France’s economic growth, investment and employment. The law has been voted in July 2015.

Macron created his own political movement ‘En marche’ shortly after he quit the government.

Macron’s announcement for presidential bid comes at a time Francois Hollande is seeking re-election next year.

Macron is not the only former Hollande’s minister to have announced running for French presidency. The list includes Arnaud Montebourg, another former French minister of Economy, and Benoit Hamon, former minister of Education and minister in charge of Social Solidarity Economy. who both said they would attend the socialist presidential primary in January 2017 that will design the socialist candidate for the election.

Current French prime minister Manuel Valls is also said to be interested in a presidential bid.
