Thomas Piketty, author of influential book Capital in the 21st Century, has refused to accept the Legion d’honneur after criticising the way nominations are handled.

AFP, the French wire service, reported that Piketty said it was not “government’s role to decide who is honourable”.

AFP added that Piketty has been increasingly distancing himself from the policies of president Francois Hollande.

Honours are typically announced at the start of the year in a number of countries, including France.
