Allianz GI launches alternatives group
Allianz Global Investors has announced the launch of an alternative investments group, including the appointment of Spencer Rhodes to the new role of Alternative Investments Global Business Manager, in the wake of a doubling of assets under management in alternative investment strategies over the past year to €5.4bn.
The group will sit as the fourth ‘pillar’ of AGI’s global investment platform, alongside equities, fixed income and multi-asset.
Andreas Utermann, global CIO and co-head of Allianz Global Investors, said the group would include strategies such as equity long/short, merger arbitrage, options trading, commodities, volatility, global macro, absolute return bonds, private debt, infrastructure debt and infrastructure equity.
“In an environment of financial repression, characterised by much lower future expected returns from the beta element of all asset classes, these strategies can help investors capture alpha,” Utermann said.
Rhodes, who joined in July 2013 from Tradewinds Investment Management LP, added that some of these strategies were long-running, while others are newer.
