Markets welcome Italy’s first exit polls
In line with markets’ expectations, the first exit polls published after Italy closed its polling stations today have confirmed that centre-left Democratic Party headed by Pierluigi Bersani is leading over Silvio Berlusconi’s right bloc.
Following the publication of the interim results, Italian shares extended a rally and bonds gained and Italy’s main FTSE MIB stock market index extended gains and was up 3% just after 3pm local time.
A poll for Italy’s SkyTG 24 news television put the centre left on 34.5% in the lower house and and 37% in the Senate, ahead Berlusconi’ coalition with the Northern League on 29% in the lower house and 31% in the Senate.
Grillo’s 5-Star Movement was on 19% in the lower house and 16.5% in the Senate, while outgoing prime minister Mario Monti’s centrist coalition was on 9.5% in the lower house and 9% in the Senate.
