Santander said to have an interest in Carige
Spain’s Santander has been said to have an interest in Italy’s Banca Carige, the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial has revealed.
The Spanish newspaper, which quoted unnamed people familiar with the matter, said that the Spanish lender would be ready to pay €700m.
Banca Carige was one of the nine Italian banks which failed the ECB stress tests in October, remaining in need of €814m fresh capital.
Upon the result release, Banca Carige announced a €500m capital increase, which was recently guaranteed by Mediolanum Group’s Mediobanca.
Following El Confidencial’s news, Banca Carige’s stocks jumped 2.45% to €0.071. Santander is also said to be considering the take over of Banco Espirito Santo, while Banco popolare Emilia Romagna, Banca popolare di Milano and Credit Agricole are said to be on Banca Carige’s case too.
