Investec AM appoints head of Emerging Markets Solutions

Investec Asset Management has hired George Varino as head of Emerging Markets Solutions.

Based in New York and reporting to Philip Anker, managing director of the firm’s North America business, Varino will be a senior member of the global EM investment team and will be leading Investec’s engagement with institutional investors.

The company said Varino’s hire highlights “its commitment to building a further major global hub.”

Varino was previously a managing director and client portfolio manager at Lazard Asset Management in New York, where he co-founded the emerging market debt business.

Prior to this, as a managing director and product specialist in HSBC’s fixed income team, he was responsible for developing the firm’s EM and alternative fixed income platform. Varino also held positions at Franklin Templeton Investments as global head of Fixed Income Product Management and at Callan Associates as head of Fixed Income Manager Research.

Commenting on the appointment, Investec’s managing director in North America Anker said: “George’s deep emerging market investment expertise is ideally suited for his mandate – to develop a meaningful dialogue with asset owners and consultants on the investment opportunities presented by the emerging markets and to help shape Investec’s emerging market investment solutions.

“Most investors in North America are underinvested in emerging markets and often lack awareness of the full opportunity set available to them during a time when many of these markets demonstrate more sustainable growth characteristics. Clients today seek new and diverse sources of return in an ever more correlated world and we believe that our firm’s unique heritage and vantage point present significant diversity of thought relative to many of our clients’ typical asset management partners. Investec has a broad range of emerging market investment capabilities and we always aim to find fresh ideas, combined with disciplined risk management, to enable our clients to meet their investment objectives.”

Investec AM had $141bn (€114.4bn) of assets under management as at end of December 2017.
