Smart beta ETF growth slows down

While inflows into smart beta ETFs are still positive in the second quarter of 2015, the growth rate declined compared to the beginning of the year, the latest data provided by French asset manager Lyxor suggest.

2015 could still become a record year for smart beta ETF’s. On a year on year basis, net new inflows into rules-based, or smart beta ETFs increased by €2.3bn or 60% of net new assets. Since the end of 2014, assets under management increased by 41%.

However, in line with a general slowdown of the ETF market, growth declined somewhat throughout the second quarter of 2015, with risk-based ETFs reporting outflows, net new assets declined from €1.7bn at the end of 2014 to €0.6bn at the beginning of 2015.

At the same time, demand for fundamentally built ETF’s continued to be strong, with net new assets in 2015 currently just over €1bn.
