SSGA appoints global SPDR COO

State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), the asset management business of State Street Corporation, has announced the appointment of Malcolm Smith to the newly created role, global SPDR chief operating officer.

He will be based in London and report to Rory Tobin, co-head of Global SPDR business.

Smith, a 30-year industry veteran will be responsible for leading, managing and developing all aspects of the operating infrastructure for the global SPDR ETF business. SSGA has assets under management in exchange traded funds totalling $452bn.

Prior to joining SSGA, Smith was interim global COO in the Global Investments and Solutions division at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management. Smith served in previous roles as global COO for M&G Real Estate and European COO of Barclays Global Investors where he played a leading role in establishing and managing the European iShares business.

Smith spent the early part of his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers as principal and head of the Investment Management Consultancy Practice for the investment management sector.
