PensionDanmark awarded for work on alternatives

Danish institutional investor PensionDanmark has been awarded for its work on alternative investments after growing its investments into areas such as infrastructure in recent years.

The company is among the 50 largest pension funds in Europe, managing schemes on behalf of some 681,000 members at over 23,000 business in the Danish private and public sectors. At the end of 2015 it claimed some €24bn under management.

Since 2009  PensionDanmark has been building its portfolio of alternative investments, including investing in infrastructure such as wind farms in Denmark, the US and UK, transmission networks in the Netherlands and Germany, and biomass plants in the UK. Its most recent infrastructure investment is a UK biomass heat and power plant project that is expected to be operational by mid-2018 and providing power to some 50,000 households.

A key aspect of the firm is adherence to responsible investments, which means it tends towads long-term ownership, said CEO Torben Möger Pedersen. Investments must meet its ESG criteria. As an investor it also takes an active engagement approach, for which it also works with an external partner, Hermes EOS. This aggregates the voices of a number of investors, and gives Hermes EOS greater clout in its dealings with companies, PensionDanmark added.
