Switzerland’s Impact hires European business head from GMO
Impact Investment Partners has hired Tobias Mueller from Grantham, Mayo and Van Otterloo as its head of European business development, to help expand the reach of wholly owned subsidiaries Blue Diamond Asset Management and Environmental Alpha.
Blue Diamond began in March 2011 under chief investment officer and Mueller’s former GMO-colleague Alex Orus.
Its funds aim to beat inflation while also nullifying any negative effect of currency fluctuations.
Impact provides non-investment support to Blue Diamond and Environmental Alpha in areas such as marketing, operations and IT support,
Blue Diamond’s funds can invest long and short in across equities, bonds, commodities and currencies. They utilise valuation and momentum processes, determining fair value in real terms based on mean reversion over market cycles.
They overweight cheap, and underweight expensive, assets classes earning performance fees only after beating inflation.
Mueller will work in Switzerland. He was previously at GMO responsible for business development and client relations in Switzerland and, before that, in internal audit at UBS.
Mueller said Impact allowed the boutiques it owned to concentrate on making money “and I was keen to join a business that seeks to understand what investors in different locations need”.
Orus said: “After the financial crisis, investors started to re-evaluate how they allocate their assets and how they perceive risk. In the past, the focus has been on nominal returns and beating asset benchmarks.
“Investors are now realizing that one of their biggest risks is the failure of their asset performance to keep pace with inflation, which can erode capital over a surprisingly short amount of time. Our strategy will address this.”
