Shant takes on Newton European income fund as Moore exits
Raj Shant has been appointed lead manager on the £19m Newton European Higher Income fund, replacing Fred Moore, who is leaving Newton to pursue opportunities outside the investment management industry.
Tom Beevers will remain alternate manager on the fund.
Shant is investment leader of the European equities department at Newton and lead manager of the Continental European strategy, in charge of both institutional and retail equity portfolios.
He joined Newton in 2002 and has worked at Credit Suisse Asset Management and Royal Insurance Management.
“In the current climate of low bond yields and zero interest rates for cash on deposit, we believe European equities are an attractive opportunity,” said Shant.
“With a wide range of world class companies offering higher dividend yields than they pay on their own corporate bonds and higher than the yields available on their governments’ bonds European equities are a compelling income opportunity.
“Investors seeking income should look to funds able to generate strong yields from a balanced portfolio. Newton is renowned for its innovative thematic approach to income-investing, and we believe the Newton European Higher Income is well positioned,” he added.
The fund has returned 20.7% over one year, against a 48.9% average, and fallen 7% over one year against an average loss of 1.8% in the sector, according to Morningstar.
