UK market FMOY 2011: The winners revealed
Schroders, Aberdeen and JO Hambro Capital Management were the big winners in the Investment Week Fund Manager of the Year awards last night at London’s Albert Hall, with Schroders named Global Group of the Year and Aberdeen winning a number of awards.
Aberdeen’s Hugh Young received the Outstanding Achievement Award for the huge amount he work he has done to popularise Asian equities in the UK and create ‘a real team investment ethos.’
Young and his team won the Asia category for the Aberdeen Global Asian Smaller Companies, while Schroders’ Nathan Gibbs won the Japan category for Schroder Japan Alpha Plus.
James Lowen and Clive Beagles picked up the award for UK Equity Income with the JOHCM UK Equity Income fund, with the judges noting how the strategic capping of the fund had really benefitted unitholders. JO Hambro Capital Management was also named Specialist Group of the Year.
Aberdeen also won the Emerging Markets category for the Aberdeen Emerging Markets and Aberdeen Global Emerging Markets Equity funds, both headed by Devan Kaloo.
Other winners included Alister Hibbert for Blackrock European Dynamic and John Eisinger for Janus US All Cap Growth. For the first year there was an Absolute Return category, with joint winners Andrew Cawker for Absolute Insight UK Equity Market Neutral, and Iain Stewart for Newton Real Return.
Liontrust continued its recovery as a business by picking up the UK Growth award. Anthony Cross and Julian Fosh landed the plaudit for their management of Liontrust Special Situations, while Nick Train was highly commended in the category for the CF Lindsell Train UK Equity fund.
The UK Smaller Companies category was won by Philip Rodrigs for the Investec UK Smaller Companies fund, while Investec’s Alastair Mundy won in the Cautious Managed category. The Active Managed award went to Graham French for his two funds M&G Managed Growth and Prudential Growth Trust, and to Baillie Gifford’s team for the Baillie Gifford Managed fund in the Balanced category.
The single country/regional fund award went David Gait and Sashi Reddy for First State Indian Subcontinent; Tim Wood won the Global Equity category for McInroy & Wood Smaller Companies, while the main Specialist category on the award for the Resources sector went to Canada-based Bob Lyon and Ani Markova for Smith & Williamson Global Gold & Resources.
Sterling Corporate Bond went to John Hampton and Nigel Bradshaw for LV= UK Corporate Bond; Strategic Bond went to Richard Hodges for the Legal & General Dynamic Bond Trust, while Philip Milburn won the High Yield category for the , AEGON High Yield Bond fund.
For the second year in a row the Global & Specialist Bond category went to Michael Hasenstab for Templeton Global Bond. Also winning for the second year in a row was Sanlam in the Financials category.
Other specialists winners were Premier in the Money Market category, First State for Property, GLG for Gilts, Atlantis for Healthcare, and joint winners in the Tech & Telecom sector were Polar Capital and AXA Framlington who shared the award.
The three adviser awards sponsored by M&G, voted for by fund managers to recognise the investment research expertise of the advisory community, were shared among three groups. The Discretionary awards went to Rathbones; Advisory to Killik & Co., and Fund of Funds to Santander Asset Management.
The awards, in their 16th year, took place as usual at the Royal Albert Hall in conjunction with Fidelity FundsNetwork, hosted by Glaswegian comedian Kevin Bridges, with guests raising money for the children’s hospice charity Shooting Star Chase.
