Barings has appointed Duncan Robertson, currently global head of Distribution and Marketing, as head of Asia Pacific while Shelley Liu has joined the firm as country head, China.
Robertson will continue to head the firm’s global distribution and marketing strategy and will lead its overall business operations and growth strategy in the Asia Pacific region, forming 34% of Barings’ external assets under management.
With the company since 2008, he will report directly to Barings’ chairman and CEO, Tom Finke and will relocate to the firm’s Sydney office from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Liu will report to Robertson and will support the establishment of Barings in China, where it has been granted approval for the setup of an investment management wholly foreign-owned enterprise (WFOE) in Shanghai.
Formerly, Liu was the chief representative of the Beijing office and head of Government Relations in China for Vanguard Investments Hong Kong Limited. Past roles were with Wellington Global Investment Management and Morgan Stanley.
“The growing influence of the Asia Pacific region within the global financial markets is among the leading narratives in the asset management industry, and our firm has positioned itself to deliver comprehensive investment solutions to clients across the region,” Finke said.
He added: “The addition of new resources and leadership focused on serving our growing client base in the region aligns with our long-term growth strategy, and will help strengthen our existing client relationships while also establishing new ones in the years ahead.”
Barings had over $306bn (€265.7bn) in assets under management as of 30 June 2018.
