Osservatorio Anima SGR, a new research group launched by Italian independent asset manager Anima, has published a report on saving behaviour of Italian households.

According to findings based on interviews with more than 550 households and collected in cooperation with GFK Eurisko, the economic crisis has changed Italians' consumptions patterns, with a greatest share of household income now allocated to savings.

In times of economic uncertainty, savings are considered a ‘safety net’ by a majority of households: 22% of surveyed families are planning to allocate savings to an ’emergency fund’, and 13% is already saving to have a reserve capital available to future unforeseen needs.

On the contrary, only 3% of Italian households is planning to invest on a complementary pension scheme.

Safety of investment tools is the main criterion on which Italy's households base their investment decision, which is considered a financial shelter to protect previously invested capital.

Trust and the personal relationship with financial advisers was also stated as very relevant by 18% of surveyed families.

Other characteristics of the investment product, such as the possibility to disinvent quickly was mentioned by 13% of Italy's households, as well as transparency of the investment (12%) and short-term duration of the investment (10%).
