Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management (SMTAM) has appointed Kenji Soejima as portfolio manager on its $900m (€791m) Japan Small Cap Strategy, working across funds as part of a team led by chief portfolio manager Satoshi Marui.
This includes the Ucits funds Japan Small Cap and Japan Small Cap II. The latter was launched in April 2018, with a focus on more liquid stocks and offering lower fees. The Japan Small Cap fund has some $400m (€351m) of AUM and is soft closed. The Small Cap II funds has AUM of more than $50m, following inflows to the end fo June 2019.
Marui noted that while there has been volatility in global equity markets, demand for Japanese small cap equities has continued to rise.
"As we seek to strengthen our offering in the small cap space, Kenji Soejima will be a strong addition to the team, with an impressive background in asset management. We are confident he will play a key role in bolstering our expertise in the Japanese small cap sector as well as fostering our relationship with clients," Marui added.
SMTAM counts overall AUM of more than $600bn (€527bn) as at the end of June 2019.
